Description
Everyone knows my affinity for roses. AND most all of you know quite often, the art work I create is a direct reflection of the mood I’m in, or the emotion I’m experiencing at any particular time. Those who follow my work ALSO know that instead of a simplistic black background for my floral work, I have been experimenting with contrasting layers, stirring up and creating backgrounds, or in this case abstracting the entire piece.
Following this most recent surgery, I came to accept the fact that my body is aging. That there are some things you just can’t fix. That I’m not eighteen anymore…. Everyone and everything grows old.
Some years ago I received a photograph from a friend who was involved in the hobby of “beading”. Her subject was a rose. I believe she created the piece for a purse or womans’ clutch. Though I’ve never been interested in hobbys such as hers, I liked the uniqueness and the texture of her project and I kept the photo with the thought, “I want to do something with this, I just don’t know what…”. When I recently “studied” it the purse photo reminded me of something my Grandmother would have carried to Sunday services at church, or what she called “for nice” events. An accessory that wasn’t “gaudy” or intrusive. Something that wasn’t offensive or showy, but to Grandma very formal.
It became my goal to create this piece in an antique sort of way. A painting my Grandmother would have proudly hung on the wall in her home. It would have hung there for years, aging along with Grandma and her other belongings. Her affinity for the piece would have been the same as the day she hung it on the wall. Outsiders would have looked down their nose at this piece at the sale following Grandmas’ passing, thinking of it as junk. “I’m only buying it for the frame” they would say. Perhaps even some family members would think, “Why on earth did she keep this?” Meanwhile YOU knew and shared the perceived outlook of elegance and grace that Grandma held so many years ago. The adage comes to mind: “One mans junk is another mans treasure.”
“One Mans Junk” is on a variety of products, including prints, greeting cards, pillow covers and more…..
