Although part of Zion National Park in Utah, USA, the Chinle Trail is not one of the “popular” spots. While most people are on the trails that, well, most people are on, the person who decides to do something slightly different will find themselves in a landscape that is beautiful and serene, quiet and out of the way.
There’s a lot to be said for beautiful and serene, quiet and out of the way.
Indeed, many people travel to places like Zion to see the incredible beauty of the landscape. And also, indeed, the park is out of the way, a place one must be determined to travel to and go to see.
But the very beauty that draws people to the park affects the serenity of the landscape and its quietness.
For the person who seeks quiet and serenity, however, it is a matter of using one’s imagination, of exploring other options, of looking around at the lesser known spots and being willing to give them a try.
An attitude like this is of value not only when traveling to popular tourist destinations, but when traveling through life as well – because in life, whether it’s through TV, movies, magazines, newspapers, advertising, and other such propaganda which have nothing to do with real, genuine life, we are gently led, pushed, prodded, and encouraged to look at things a certain way, to dress in a particular style, to live our lives in accordance with what is “desirable” (popular), indeed, to even dream dreams that someone else puts in front of us, as opposed to what we find in our own hearts.
When we do this – when we walk on paths that few people know about because they’re so busy finding the paths that everyone is talking about – we often find ourselves alone, but that’s not a bad thing. When we’re away from the crowds that jostle, we are able to think, to ponder, and to see the landscape around us and fully appreciate its beauty.
It’s when we’re On the Chinle Trail that we’re on an adventure.
