Oliver Hardy, of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, was nicknamed "Babe" as a child by a Florida barber. The nickname stuck because Hardy was huge, cute, and chubby, weighing 300 pounds at 6'1". He also had a baby face that could be grumpy or smiley.
