Olive Garden In Infrared
Photograph - Fine Art
The is a 21st Century false color infrared (IR) photograph of an olive grove in Lun, Croatia on the Island of Pag. The olive garden is over 1600 years old, and spans across a surface of 24 hectares, counting an incredible 80,000 olive trees. They probably started their life journey as wild olives, but at some point, families of Pag began to populate the area, claiming various parcels of the gardens as years went by. Many trees are marked with a distinctive sign - some are initials, or some blobs of color. It is well known which family each tree belongs to. The locals call them stop - Columns, a fitting term for the timeless giants standing up to countless centuries, the forceful aura wind and human intervention. There are several olive trees in the gardens of Lun that are more than 1000 years old, making for a unique site that is rarely seen on the Mediterranean as a whole. The show stopper is on particular 1600 year old, a magnificent being that stands as the main attraction of Lun.
This was my first infrared photograph made with a regular Nikon D810 and a 680 nm infrared lens filter. Infrared Photography is an interpretation of what we think is reality. The function of Infrared Photography (like Black and White Photography) is not to render the world as we see it, but rather to use light, dark and false color to enhance texture and composition. The invisible infrared light has a profound influence on the texture of the sky and clouds that is not seen in visible light photography.
