Description
Old Hotel Cuba
Two Currencies
Money in Cuba is a bit confusing. There are two official currencies in Cuba, and those visiting Havana will likely be using both.
* CUP – This is the local peso, or currency, used among Cubans. Of course, tourists can use the CUP too, and they might find that places that accept only this currency are far cheaper.
* CUC – This is formally the tourist currency, and it's accepted widely throughout Havana. It is more or less related to the dollar as far as exchange rates go. For instance, $25 CUC is very close to $25 USD. Travelers should be careful before paying to be sure they're not being overcharged.
It can be difficult to find places that exchange U.S. dollars, but contrary to popular belief, it's not impossible. Travelers should bring enough cash to exchange, as credit cards and debit cards from foreign countries don't typically work here.
