Description

You expect to see impressive oak trees at a state park named Washington Oaks, and sure enough, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park in St. Augustine, Florida, delivers!

This drive is lined with stately live oak trees forming a beautiful arched canopy overhead which, in addition to being scenic, offers a bit of welcome shade. To the left of the scene pictured here, within the verdant grounds of the park, there are more majestic oaks, lovely gardens,including a magnifcient rose garden, and picturesque beautifully-landscaped ponds.

St. Augustine is Florida's oldest city and it is full of historical sights, including the site where the Spanish first set foot on American soil. The region also has beaches, including one right across the road from this area which is unusual because of the prevalence of coquina rocks in the water and on the sand. Coquina was a favorite building material for early settlers to the region, and can be seen on St. Augustine's old city gates and in other historic structures. Further north, the beaches, like Vilano Beach and Ponte Vedra, are more traditional Atlantic beaches, and they are a bit more inviting for swimmers.
