Description
NY Tower of the GW Bridge in Autumn by Regina Geoghan. A view of the New York side of the George Washington Bridge with autumn foliage as seen from a park along the Hudson River in New Jersey. Note the little red lighthouse at the base of the bridge tower. It was erected on Sandy Hook, New Jersey in 1880, fitted with a 1,000 pound fog signal and flashing red light to guide ships. It was dismantled in 1917, considered obsolete. In 1921, the U.S. Coast Guard reconstructed this lighthouse in it's current spot to improve navigational aids on the Hudson River. When years later it again became obsolete , the plan was to take it down. Public outcry was so strong that the lighthouse stayed in place and became quite famous due to a children's book published about it. Today it is part of the New York City park system and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
