Notre Dame de Paris in Green, by Bonnie Follett.
This is a collage style poster prepared in remembrance of my visit to this famous cathedral while a student visiting Paris in October 1974. On a student budget and with only a film camera (of course) I took only four black and white photos at this location. So I have prepared a composite using these photos. I added the text "La Coeur Battant de Paris - Toujours... 15 Avril 2019" to mark the date of the fire. My intention was to imply the cathedral is the beating heart of the city and will always survive (despite the fire).
Notre-Dame de Paris is a medieval Catholic cathedral built in French Gothic style. It sits on the Île de la Cité in the city of Paris, France, and many consider it to be the center and heart of the city. It serves a Roman Catholic congregation.
The cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and is considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It's planning and construction was begun in 1160 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely complete by 1260, although it was modified frequently in the following centuries.
While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. The world watched in horror as it burned for around 15 hours. The cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the spire and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling. The ancient wooden supports for the ceiling are now gone. It is said that a forest of 13,000 trees was required for its preparation.
The cathedral will inevitably be repaired and rebuilt, but the world has been saddened by the horror of the damage this sacred space has sustained. To walk into that cathedral was to experience a sense of awe and spiritual quietude found in few places on earth.
