Description
Notorious Blair Street by Lynn Sprowl
A visit to Silverton is not complete without understanding the history of this small mountain town. An exciting and scenic trip to get there by either car or train is part of the adventure. Now the town is a proper souvenir and touristy town. It is, however, fun!!!
A sign in Silverton with descriptions of the Who, What, When, Where, and the Why Blair Street was described as Silvertons "Red Light District". As soon as silver struck, establishments popped up to help separate a miner from his money.
In Blair Street's prime, there were 32 Saloons, Gambling Halls, and House of Ill-Repute in a four block stretch of the street (aptly named after one of the original San Juan Prospectors, Thomas Blair).
On April 1, 1905 Silverton residents gathered on the corner of 10th and Blair (in front of the Avon Hotel) to declare through town ordinance that 10th Street north to 14th Street on Blair would be henceforth known as "Notorious Blair Street"
