Northern Lights On Bad Meidine Lake

Description
I wasn't expecting to see the northern lights on the evening of July 10th. I was shooting the moonset and a thunderstorm to the South. I happened to look North and saw a band of vertical rays shimmering on the horizon. It looked very subdued compared to what the camera sensor picked up on this 30 second exposure, but very special nonetheless. I got about 6 or 7 exposures before they vanished completely. I haven't seen them on Bad Medicine Lake in several years. The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are caused by geomagnetic disturbances at the polar regions in our atmosphere. Solar wind excites particles at different altitudes of our atmosphere causing visible auroral emissions. The same phenomenon can be seen near the South pole. The Southern Lights are known as aurora australis.
