Description
Aldeyjarfoss is an amazing waterfall in north Iceland. About an hour's drive from the more famous Goðafoss along the Ring Road, Aldeyjarfoss is worth the trip and far outshines its more well-known neighbor. It tumbles 65' into a canyon lined with lava basalt columns. The water is an amazing turquois color when the sun is high in the sky. The road to reach this location is 40km of dirt, with the last stretch being a 4WD section where you have to pass through private land - opening and closing gates while curious sheep watch from a distance. The payoff is this view - and you'll probably have the place to yourself!
About an hour's drive off the Ring Road, Aldeyjarfoss is an often overlooked waterfall in lieu of the more well-known Goðafoss. However, Aldeyjarfoss is more spectacular - turquoise water of the Skjálfandafljót River falling 65 feet while surrounded by basalt columns. And if you make the drive down the 40km dirt road and through several gates, you'll likely have the view all to yourself.
