Emerging from the North Germanic tribes of Scandinavia, the Vikings are widely recognized for their unique influences in Medieval European history. Famous for their raids in the British Isles and Ireland, from the 790's, until the Norman Invasion of England in 1066, the Vikings also played a major political role throughout the early Medieval history of Europe. From establishing the foundation of Russia and the Rurik Dynasty, in Kievan Rus, to the Atlantic Sagas (leading to the settlement of France, the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland and the eventual discovery of North America), to their Byzantine settlements in Sicily, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, trading with exotic lands as far as Africa and the Middle East; the Vikings helped to shape the geopolitical and ethnographic foundation of the Europe we know today.
