Description
The traditional New Orleans' Mardi Gras royalty meets the traditional Cajun/Creole Courir de Mardi Gras. NOLA contributes tokens for Mamou's Community Gumbo.
The two Louisiana traditions are extremely different. New Orlean's Mardi Gras has participants dressed in royal clothing costing thousands of dollars and throwing out necklaces, gold colored coins, fancy shoes and other royal gifts. Mask are made of porcelain, ceramic, resin, or paper mache. Participants go to balls and parade down the streets on beautifully decorated floats. While in Mamou, Louisiana participants wear colorful costumes most often decorated with cotton fabric that has been cut into fringes. Mask are made of screen that has been painted in folk art style with simple geometric shapes and trimmed with fabric. Large stuffed noses are attached to the mask. Tall pointed caps with skirts to cover the hair are also worn Participants go from house to house begging for ingredients for a gumbo on horseback or ride in livestock trailers pulled by pick-up trucks. Their favorite donation is live chickens which they must scramble to catch themselves.
The things they have in common is that both celebrate with feast before the 40 days of fast for Lent. Both are fun and very entertaining. Both styles of Mardi Gras benefits the communities through charitable
donations and tourism.
