Description
This rare site of snow in New Orleans, Louisiana was taken in 1984. I was employed at Loyola University in the Academic Affairs Department and had walked over 5 miles home after the employee office Christmas Party!!! It was during the week of Christmas just before everyone left for the holiday break. Reports were it was possible New Orleans could get some snow and just about !2 noon, we had noticed a few flurries starting to fall.
Here in New Orleans everything pretty much comes to a stand still, we hurried up completing the Christmas party and was offered a ride but told everyone I would catch the St. Car, I was surprised to say the least when I walk over to the avenue it resembled a ghost town. I had my camera with me that day started the journey home well over 5 miles I hiked down the middle of the tracks. Less than four blocks from my residence did someone stop and offer me a ride home. The front of me was covered in snow. New Orleans had experienced one of most record bitter cold snaps down from the Artic temperatures reached as low in the teens.
I was planning to catch a train north to spend the Christmas Holidays with friends in Mississippi were canceled traveling north, I caught the train a day or two later. As the train passes near Lake Pontchartrain north west to travel north, waves from the bitter north winds were frozen solid at the shore line near the railroad tracks.
After the big thaw just about every major home suffered broken water pipes. Water was shooting from second floor walls because the homes were not insulated for such bitter cold conditions. It was a snow fall I will always remember.
I was in two blizzards up north in my lifetime one in Washington, DC in the 70's and the other one in New Hope, Pennsylvania in 2006. I just love the snow!!!

Greetings Steve, thank you so much for viewing New Orleans Snow Uptown In New Orleans it pleases me this photo appeals to you. This particular snow scape of St. Charles Avenue occurred back in the 80's. The big snow event came within miles of New Orleans we only had a couple of wintry mixed snow showers.....it was so close. Because of Lake Pontchartrain to the north the warmth radiating from the waters kept the temperatures warmer over New Orleans. All places south, west, north and east received the rare snow event......I appreciate the comment and the L, Fav, Cheers, Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year!!! Michael Hoard
