When I first viewed the bacterial mats at the Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, I admit my first thought was not ‘thermophiles’. Since I was at the start of a kitchen remodeling process, my first thought was ‘granite countertop patterns’. I learned quickly enough that these were not granite but huge colonies of heat-loving bacteria called thermophiles. Different types of thermophiles require specific extreme temperatures to thrive and cannot tolerate temperatures much outside a particular range. As the water from the thermal features gets farther from the source, you can see gradations of color as one group of thermophiles is replaced by another.
