Description
ONE OF MY SOLD IMAGES, AVAILABLE AGAIN
Restored film photograph of Mountain Shadows resort in 1993, with nearby Camelback Mountain and palm trees reflected in its beautiful aqua blue swimming pool. Image was shot early on a summer morning, when no people were at the pool. Both the mountain and resort have long been beloved landmarks of Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
Camelback Mountain derived its name from its shape, for it resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel. Mountain Shadows derived its name from being in the shadow of Camelback Mountain.
Mountain Shadows resort is where my senior prom was held, and where my family and I stayed in 1993. Summer rates were then $59 a night, a bargain for such an upscale resort. On the other hand, it was the off-season, with temperatures well above 100 degrees, even by 8 a.m.
Sadly for many of us who have great memories of this hotel, especially during our high school and college years, demolition began on the landmark 55-year-old property in February 2014. The resort closed in 2004 and was boarded up for ten years. I'm told that plans for redevelopment call for a boutique hotel and homes. Trusting that a wise investor purchased this beautiful landmark, and someday I'll learn the rest of the story.
Personal note: Area hotels--specifically Mountain Shadows, The Biltmore, and the Safari Hotel--would allow me and my friends to swim at no charge, and use their lockers. Perhaps they hoped that in a few years we would return. That's what what we did. Great PR. Great memories.
