Canada Geese are devoted parents who will fiercely defend their goslings from any danger perceived or real. They are also advocates of the philosophy. ā€It takes a villageā€¦ā€¯, and one Canada Goose will frequently be seen temporarily baby-sitting a massed flock of twenty or more goslings from several different families.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE: - In May of 2010, I was out in the Britania area of Ottawa, with a Nikon D700 full frame camera mounted with a Nikkor 300 mm f/2.8 prime lens and a 2x teleconverter (an effective focal length of 600mm). I was looking for shore birds or warblers. I came around the bend in a small creek and just in front of me, I saw a Canada Goose sitting on a nest with a brood of newly hatched (maybe a day or two old) goslings under her/his wing (note that both parents tend for the goslings and I really don't know if this was the mother or the father; but I will assume the mother). I was far enough away from her that she was wary of me; but not overly upset by my presence. I slowly mounted my camera and lens on a tripod topped with a Jobu Gimbal mount and focused on the nest. One of the goslings emerged from beneath the parents wing and cuddled up. The adult goose kept her eye on me; but was not frightened. I took a few pictures and quietly backed away feeling very blessed to have witnessed and recorded this intimate moment in the lives of this family of Canada Geese.
