Adams was a mostly self-taught artist who traveled and lived in Colorado for more than 30 years. Adams’s Moraine Park is based on the painting tradition of naturalism (or a realistic description) rather than exaggeration or romanticism.

Adams was able to capture the light and atmosphere of the Rocky Mountains, a reflection of his direct and intimate knowledge of the landscape. Moraine Park is located within Rocky Mountain National Park and can be seen today as Adams depicted it.

Charles Partridge Adams was born in Franklin, Massachusetts on January 12, 1858. He moved to Colorado with his family during his teenage years in hopes of curing his sister’s tuberculosis (another sister had already died from it) in Colorado’s dry, sunny climate. Adams would become an important Colorado landscape artist known especially for his ability to depict the light and atmosphere of the Rocky Mountains and for his paintings of Estes Park and Longs Peak.

He was primarily self-taught but gained wisdom from Colorado artists such as Helen Henderson Chain whom he worked for in Denver, and his friend and travel companion, painter Alexander Phimister Proctor. In 1902 Adams moved to Estes Park with his wife and three boys, and the family began construction on their home and studio called the “Sketch Box,” completed in 1905. Charles Partridge Adams was a charter member of the Denver Artists’ Club in 1893 and an important contributor to Colorado’s art history.
