Description

The word "moose" comes from an Algonquin word that means "twig eater." Moose are so tall that they prefer to browse higher grasses and shrubs because lowering their heads to ground level can be difficult. In winter they eat shrubs and pinecones, but they also scrape snow with their large hooves to clear areas for browsing on mosses and lichens. Males, called bulls, bellow loudly to attract mates each September and October. The usually solitary bulls may come together at this time to battle with their antlers for mating supremacy. Adult males may weigh as much as 1500 pounds (680 kilograms). Average weights for adult males are closer to 1000 pounds (450 kg) and 800 pounds (360 kg) for adult females. The largest moose live in Alaska. Moose have digestive systems similar to domestic cattle. They are "ruminants" and have four parts to their stomachs. Following eating periods, they will rest and return partially digested food from their stomach to their mouths to "chew the cud" and more completely break down their food before swallowing it again. Moose have no upper front teeth. Antlers are important visual symbols indicating social position and condition of the bull to other bulls and cows. Moose can move through deep snow with their long legs, insulated from the cold by a thick coat of hollow hairs. They have good senses of smell and hearing, but are not noted for their eyesight. Moose have hairy skin called bell that hangs underneath the throat.They really like willows to feed on. All my art is generated digitally from my original photographs.
