Description
Almost full Moon rising at blue hour over the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. This is a view from a canyon west of the Observatory.
The Griffith Observatory is a Los Angeles icon, a national leader in public astronomy, a beloved civic gathering place, and one of southern California's most popular attractions. It is a popular tourist attraction with an extensive array of space, astronomy and science-related displays. A monthly free public star party is held at the Observatory, with assistance of volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers and the Planetary Society. The star party is featured in the image 'Stargazers at Dusk' in my Los Angeles gallery.
In addition to the Observatory building in the lower right in this picture, there is the Astronomers Monument to the left (lower-middle). It is a large outdoor concrete sculpture that pays homage to six of the greatest astronomers of all time: the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton, and John Herschel. You can see the Monument in the image ‘Griffith Observatory and Crescent Moon at Blue Hour’ in my Los Angeles gallery.
