Description
Quaint, charming Montefollonico, a tiny hamlet in the Municipality of Torrita di Siena, located atop a hill between the Valdichiana and the Val d’Orcia dates to the around the year 1000 or before.
Named after Fullonico, the first mountain settlement near the Conventaccio (Abbey of Cassinese monks dating to the 8th century) which, located near an impression in the earth, follatura, used for the working and dyeing of wool. locating in the hills from Monte a Fullonico to Montefollonico offered protection for the ancient inhabitants. The area was great strategic importance to nearby Siena.
Today it is a beautiful, small Tuscan village with an historic bell tower surrounded by historic stone walls and ramparts, one of which is pictured here surrounded by scenic countryside. Inside the walls resides the Church of San Leonardo an important Romanesque remain in the Siena territory as well as the Church of San Bartolomeo which dates to the 12th century.
The town is quiet in the evening except for a few very wonderful restaurants well worth a visit.
The town, located in the historic, wonderful, picturesque hillside country exudes a singular, quiet, uneffected charm unusual in the area, well worth a visit or a stay.
