Description
This very unusual, but beautiful flower is that of a common houseplant, Monstera (Monstera deliciosa). As with many house plants brought to Hawai'i, it has naturalized into wet forest areas. I can remember the very first time I was in Hawai'i in 1979, driving the Hana Road and being astounded seeing a houseplant my mother kept, wending its way up the trunks of tall palm trees. What I did not know until I moved to Hawai'i was how unsual and beautiful the flowers of this plant are. The corn-like pillar at the center is actually the fruit, which is edible. The fruit takes nearly a year to ripen. The odor of the ripening fruit is very sweet and is very pineapple-like. I tried to eat one of the fruits one time, but it is filled with tiny hair-like fibers that irritated my mouth and throat.
