Molting Female American Goldfinch
Photograph - Photo
Photographic artwork by Cindy Treger. Photographed near Lake Meade, East Berlin, PA. I believe that this is a female American Goldfinch, Carduelis tristis, that is almost through her molting process. Her bill and feet are almost orange and she doesn't have the males black forehead. She is becoming her dull olive yellow and will molt again in the fall. These little birds are known for their twitter during flight and their roller-coaster-like flight. They feed on insects and seeds, especially Nyjer thistle. In the summer/fall/winter they love to feast on coneflowers and sunflowers; therefore, I don't cut my coneflowers until spring. These are beautiful little birds year-round in PA.
