Moguls are a series of bumps on a trail formed when skiers push the snow into mounds or piles as they execute short-radius turns. This tends to happen naturally as skiers use the slope. They can also be constructed on a slope for freestyle skiing competitions.
Mogul skiing is a type of freestyle skiing where skiers perform tricks, jumps and incredible turns while remaining in the fall line (an imaginary line that combines the steepest pitch and most direct line, from top to bottom, of any slope). Skiers absorb the impact of the bumps by bending at the knees and hips. In Olympic competition, mogul skiers ski down a mountain through and over a field of moguls taking air twice on the way down. They are judged on technique, speed, quality and difficulty of their two aerial maneuvers.
