Description
Big Prairie is an unincorporated community in northwestern Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio, United States. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 44611. It lies less than one mile east of Odell Lake.
Big Prairie was laid out in 1871. It was the Monitor Sadiron Company that put Big Prairie on the map. There was also a Monitor Hotel and a Monitor Theater where silent movies were shown, and various other business shops and stores including a bank that is still in operation today. But with the coming of electricity, sadirons were no longer in demand and the factory in Big Prairie closed as did the hotel and theater.
Big Prairie is also home to many Wayne County Amish families. My ancestors originated in Big Prairie and settled on Newkirk Road in the late 1800's where you will also find the Newkirk Cemetery around the corner from this farm. My great, great grandmother donated the land for this fine cemetery and it is a very beautiful place for anyone to be buried there. If you like peace and tranquility and the smell of fresh air, Then Big Prairie, Ohio is a place you need to visit.
