Description
The Meiji Shrine in Tokyo Japan is dedicated to the Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) and his wife, Empress Shoken (1849-1914). Emperor Meiji is considered the first modern emperor of Japan, overseeing the Meiji Restoration, a period of industrialization, urbanization and militarization. It represented Japan’s attempt to catch up with the major Western powers. The shrine was completed in 1920 shortly after the death of the emperor. It was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt shortly afterwards. It was and is Japan's most famous Shinto shrine.
