Description
This historic concrete arch bridge has been in existence since 1820 in one form another. It was first proposed in 1816 and then built in 1820. As Northeastern Pa grew from an agricultural community to the heyday of when coal was "King" to a once thriving river community the bridge was replaced on 2 more occasions to meet the growing needs and changes in transportation. The 2nd bridge was completed around 1855 then replaced by a steel bridge in 1892. The current bridge was constructed during the years between 1926 and 1929. It spans the North Branch of the Susquehanna River and connects the river communities of Kingston and Wilkes-Barre. It is a 1,274.3-foot-long (388.4 m) bridge with 12 spans. There are four main spans, each measuring 120-foot-long (37 m).[2]. It is one of the longest and most highly ornamented concrete bridges in Pennsylvania. This monumental 12 arch reinforced concrete and granite structure incorporated two pylons at approach; each pylon is topped with a giant carved limestone eagle. Inscribed on each tower are short dedications to the values of the region. They Read:
PROGRESS
to the CULTURE, begot by splendid schools and teachers, we owe rise in higher realm of mind and spirit.
PROSPERITY
in the INDUSTRY builded by human hand and brain, on our mineral resources, we owe growth, influence and welfare.
PATRIOTISM
to the SERVICE of our heroes sacrificial on land and sea in every war, glorious and forever, unforgot we pay homage.
PERSEVERANCE
to the FORTITUDE of early settlers facing hardship, fearless and unflinching, we owe the origins of what we are
Bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
