Description
I sometime encounter the gentle manatee while kayaking in South Florida waterways. They come up to the surface of the water to breath on average every 3-5 minutes. The Florida manatee is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee: mainly seen in shallow coastal areas of Florida, north to Georgia and west to Texas; and in other areas in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. They were designated an Endangered Species in the 1970’s when there were only several hundred left. With federal protection, they rebounded to several thousand and are now classified as “threatened.” Primary causes of death are strikes from watercraft; and entanglement in mono-filament line, fishing nets, hooks, etc. Part of the 100 WILD ANIMAL MINI-PRINTS series.
