Title
Lunch At The Esperanza
Artist
Sue Bonnar
Medium
Painting - Pen And Ink, Watercolor Pencil
Description
This summer I was at Fulton Harbor one day when I saw many hummingbirds and butterflies all feeding on the many flowers there. I had already decided I was going to do a drawing of Esperanza flowers with butterflies, when I happened to see a large bush full of flowers. Suddenly a male Ruby Throated Hummingbird came over and began to feed on one of the yellow flowers. A black swallowtail butterfly then floated over to feed on the same plant. The territorial little buzzer then proceeded to chase the butterfly away, just like he would another hummingbird! That image was the inspiration for this work titled "Lunch at the Esperanza" with a Monarch and Black Swallowtail butterflies and male Ruby Throated Hummer Bird all feeding on the same Esperanza bush. These plants bloom like crazy here in South Texas, especially during the late summer.
The original of this drawing is 11 x 14 in pen and ink and watercolor pencil on 140 lb. watercolor bond.
Thanks so much for looking!

What unsuspected intrigue among your active little circle of animal friends, Sue... I hope the Butterfly doesn't Swallow its Tail & cause the Feeding Bird to choke in its Throat while Humming over Lunch @ the Esperanza Inn, Monarch Texas!
