Description
Waterbury Clock Company was once the largest clock manufacturer in America and due to this the area became known as the "Switzerland of America". If my memory serves me correctly at one time this company employed over 2000 people. (This # could be much higher. I will have to find the information to substantiate this.) The company suffered a great deal from the depression and nearly went into bankruptcy. However, the company was re-organized and subsequently, they manufactured the famous Mickey Mouse watch. Again, if my memory serves me correctly, Walt Disney visited the Waterbury Clock Company plant to review the Mickey Mouse watch before it went on the market. Further, during WWI soldiers needed an easy way to tell time and as a result, Waterbury Clock Co. developed one of the first wristwatches to meet the military's needs. The company was later sold to Norwegian investors in 1942 and subsequently became the United States Time Corporation in 1944 known for the Timex watch. Following they built a new plant and the company moved to Middlebury, CT. In 1969, the company became the famous Timex Corporation.
Sadly this gigantic and once impressive building that spans several blocks has sat abandoned potentially for over 50 years where once this area was a booming economic center of America. Now on the contrary, amongst the ruins in this neighborhood are people that live amongst the ghosts of an industrious past in poverty and blight. Now a few years later after I took this shot most of the Waterbury Clock Company complex has been torn down.
