Description
This spectacular sunrise blew my mind this past Tuesday, Unbelievable! Better explained by Weather Service Meteorologist, Deirdre Kann.. Much like a prism separates the light spectrum and creates a rainbow, microscopic particles of smoke or dust in our atmosphere do the same thing.
"Little particulates in the atmosphere scatter the visible light,"
Kann says that during broad daylight, we mostly see the blue side of the spectrum. That's why the sky looks blue.
"But as the sun gets to a very low angle, either at sunrise or sunset, it goes through a deeper layer of the atmosphere. So all the blue gets scattered out and we're left with the oranges and the reds," said Kann. "The combination of the scattering and some nicely-placed clouds can just set our sky on fire.
