Description
Lightning storms are not that common in Hawai'i, especially on Hawai'i Island. In early December of 2021 we had a series of powerful lightning storms due to a confluence of three large storms that collided over the Islands. A deep cold front streamed in from Siberia, a strom storm off the South American coast and a Southern Pacific tropical storm collided creating strong convective forces that lit up our skies and boomed thunder for nearly a week. Many times it is difficult to see lightning when you are situated at sea level or close to it, due to a thick marine layer of clouds. This image was taken on the slopes of Mauna Kea of a portion of the storm that was stationary for over an hour. The yellow glow in the sky is from street lights from Hilo far below.
