Description
This lion doorknocker adorns a lovely old door in Osijek, Slavonia, Croatia.
Some of the first door knockers appeared in ancient Greece; doors were answered by slaves whose masters chained them to a ring outside the door so they could not run away. Fast forward--the rings remain and mechanical door knockers were born. People began embellishing door knockers with designs, many influenced by mythology, religious teachings and nature. Lions probably symbolized then what they do now: strength, pride, protection and supremacy. They are kings of the jungle, but a lion door knocker serves the master within, which implies those who dwell behind those doors are mightier still.
