Description

The Lehigh and New England Railroad, Caboose #583 of 1899 was significant for its association with the history of American railway transportation of goods and passengers in the steam era from 1899 to 1953, and as typical and representative of all-steel Cabooses in use before the mid 20th century.

Equipment similar to the structures in the Steamtown NHS collection of motive power and rolling stock would have been found in railroad yards in Pennsylvania and the nation during the steam era and contributed to the broad pattern of America’s industrial growth.

Cabooses were an integral part of train operations; signal men, brakemen and other crew would ride the train in the caboose, leaving the car as necessary to check equipment, change switches and oversee freight train movement.

This Caboose was built by Reading Company Shops and purchased by Lehigh & New England RR in 1937 as part of an equipment modernization program.

When the RR petitioned for abandonment in 1961, Central RR of New Jersey purchased 40 miles of track in Pennsylvania and some rolling stock, including this Caboose.

It was sold to Steamtown Foundation in 1976, which repainted it in 1988 incorrectly as Caboose number 580, and was transferred to the NPS in 1989.

Research in 1999 indicated the correct number for the Caboose is 583.

This beautiful wonder is still on display at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
