Description
The Galapagos Islands are known more for the wildlife and not for the landscapes. However, the exception would Bartolome Islet, the most photographed island in the Galapagos. Bartolome Island used to be a volcano, emerging from the sea between 1.5 to 2 million years ago. Today Bartolome is uninhabited but there are two landing possibilities for visitors. One landing spot leads up the 600 m trail to the 144 m summit. Along the way, you walk through variety of red, orange, green, and glistening black volcanic formations. You also will see ‘pioneer vegetation’, which are the first plants to establish roots on new ground. The sparseness of the vegetation attests to how difficult that is in volcanic ground! UNESCO declared the Galapagos a Natural Heritage Site for Humanity in 1978, and the Galapagos National Park a Biosphere Reserve in 1984.
