Larger Than Life - The Encounter
Painting - Kyle's Oil
This is from a true story. About 15 years ago in Tsavo National Park, Kenya. We were just driving through the park to a certain destination to see a community Project. The plan was we get to the project and spend the afternoon watching wildlife in the park. We decided to use a road that is not busy with tourist cars following wildlife. We were sure we wouldn’t come across major wildlife apart from maybe a few antelopes on this particular dirt road.
We drove for thirty minutes through some bushy part, then out of the bush and into this open savannah… and suddenly, from nowhere, there he was! A huge bull elephant! Right there infront of us about to cross the road! I thank our driver for his reflexes up till today. He veered off the dirt road fast enough as we narrowly missed the big guy!
Man! That would have been a disaster! Hitting an animal that big would be just as bad as hitting the side of a rock! From that day, while in the Kenyan Savannah, whether I am driving or someone else is, I always remind them to drive with caution. You just never know what Animal will come out of what bush and into the road! Remembering this encounter is never funny, but it gave me another chance to Paint this great beast! The African Elephant, a marvel of creation!
In this painting, I gave this fellow a LARGER than life presence to capture the feeling of fear and drama in this encounter. The power of the elephant is more important that the reality in this work. That is the true feeling in reality! It will forever be cast in stone: in my mind.
