Description
The LaChappele Home was built by Herbert LaChappele a French Canadian on land he bought in 1822 on the corner of Union and Grollee Streets in Opelousas, Louisiana. The home features an outdoor staircase which leads to attic space used as living quarters for the single men and older boys in the family. These living spaces were called a "garconniere." They were very popular in Acadiana. In 1991 the Lachappele Home was moved to Le Vieux Village which is located between the east and west bound lanes of Highway 190 in Opelousas, Louisiana.
The village is lit up during the Christmas season with thousands of lights. The lights stay strung all year. This image was taken in June 2017.
