The city of Almere is noted for its wide variety of modern architecture. A new office building entitled 'La Defense' was added in 2004. Designed by UNStudio it is characterised by its unique shape and colour.

The exterior walls of La Defense are clad with glass panels in which a multi-coloured foil is integrated and, depending on the time of day and the angle of light, a variety of different colours are reflected, animating and colourising the surrounding courtyards.
