Description
This statue of King Kamehameha the 1st in Hilo Hawai'i. King Kamehameha is known as Kamehameha the Great as he was the chief of Hawai'i Island that united all the Islands of Hawai'i under his reign. This was done by sending invading warriors to Oahu and Maui that waged bloody battles and won. The then chief of Kauai and Ni'ihau Islands, Kaumuali'i, after rebuffing onslaughts from Kamehameha's warriors previously, decided to cede and become a vassal of Kamehameha to avoid more death of his subjects.
After uniting all the Islands under his reign, the Hawaiian Kingdom became peaceful after enduring centuries of bloody battles and destruction between warring chiefs. Kamehameha has been revered since then as a great King of the Hawaiian people.
On June 11 every year in Hawai'i, the State celebrates the King with parades, festivals and cermonial symbolic draping of all the State's statues of Kamehameha with long flower and plant leis. This Hilo statue is one of 5 official statues of the King. Locations include two on Hawai'i Island (the birthplace of Kamehameha), one on Oahu, one on Maui, one in Washington D.C.
