Description
Joseph Canyon, where the Nez Perce people used to spend their winters, lies in quiet, stately majesty.
When it comes to canyons, deep cliffs, and the landscape of depth and space, we frequently think of the U.S. Southwest, as if this were the only location in which to find such canyons.
But up in the Pacific Northwest, in northeast Oregon and Southwest Washington, there are a number of glorious, magnificent canyons, tucked away on highways and byways that are little used. The Wallowa Whitman National Forest, in northeast Oregon, is a place of great beauty, incredible silence, and a tranquility that is not easily found in today’s “modern” age.
There is something awe inspiring about standing at the edge of one of these canyons, such as Joesph Canyon in the artwork by the same name, and realizing that what we see before us is pretty much what Chief Joseph, and his Nez Perce people in the late 19th century, saw before them as well. Absent would be the highway behind us, the parking lot with its “educational” signs that never seem to educate very much, but the vista of the canyons, the hills and cliffs opening out before us and disappearing into the atmosphere of the horizon, is very much the same.
Joseph Canyon, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into this timeless vista of silence, space, depth, majesty, tranquility, and peace, and to remind him or herself that life does not have to consist of the trappings of “modern” life – we are not stuck in the world of carpeted office cubicles, and nagging, ringing phones, and irritable, and irritated, drivers on the highway.
There are still pristine landscapes of beauty on this planet, and it is worth getting off the highway for a moment to step out of the car, and walk to the rim, and listen to the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees. And when we cannot be there, then it is worth having art on our walls that transports us out of the white noise surrounding us, into a place of rest and respite.
