These cows are grazing on the BLM managed public lands of South Steens Mountain. I had gone there to see the wild horses, but I believe they had been pushed further in on the lands to make way for the cattle. The cattle are peaceful and the calves are extremely cute. I liked the way the cows were all looking at me here with their gentle and somewhat sad eyes.
The title? - I'm a wannabe vegetarian. I don't eat a lot of meat and I have tried not to eat meat at all, but have not been successful. If I knew the cattle were treated humanely and suffered as little as possible, I wouldn't mind as much, but knowing that so much of our food production is completely uncaring of the physical or emotional state of the animal, and often torturous, I feel extremely guilty knowing that I am partially responsible for it. I do look for Certified Humane Labels and think I will start asking my store managers for this when I do buy meat. There is a list of producers who are certified human on this the website (link below), and they also have a partial list of those who are not. https://certifiedhumane.org/whos-certified/ . These Oregon cows at least get to free range for a while, but I don't know what their journey will be or where they will end up when it is time for them to be sold.
