Description
Okay, I'm just having fun with the title but it sure looks to me like I'm pointing out where that big Milky Way is up above. Of course, it's a lot easier to see for a camera than it is with the human eye but if you have any idea what to look for and you're in a place without a lot of light pollution, it's pretty easy to find.
And if you've never seen the Milky Way with your own eyes, don't miss your chance. It's something I think everyone should see before they die.
To be honest, locations with dark skies and their ability to show off details in the skies above is one of the big reasons we love to book our night photography workshops in great places for dark skies like Arches & Canyonlands in Utah, Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, and on Mount Evans in Colorado.
How I Got The Shot
There's no doubt, it took some nerve to get this shot. Sure, I've done it before but it's not a place to take lightly - especially when I'm the one standing on Mesa Arch. With a remote trigger in my left hand and a flashlight in my right, I just had to be a good foreground prop by remaining still for 30 seconds at a time. Darren helped to get our students ready so they could make the most of it without much repetition.
This location is actually better for combining the Milky Way with Mesa Arch in the spring to early summer months. August is about as late as we like to try it and this perspective looking more to the south helps to make the most of it.
A little light painting on Mesa Arch comes from an LED light panel sitting in the rocks at the bottom.
