Description
A glass plate photograph that was taken around the early 1900's by Allen H. Wattles ( my step-father's relative who was involved someway in the news industry). There was a lot of damage to the glass plate negative but the ghost like images of pedestrians walking are wonderful to see.
The photo was named "Isle of Safety" for the curbed concrete island in the middle of the road. This island is to provide a place of safety for pedestrians from troubles on the street like runaways. The isle of safety is located at Main Street East and East Avenue in Rochester, New York
The building behind the Isle of Safety is the Sibley Triangle Building. It is a five-story, triangular, flat-iron shaped, brick commercial building. The building was built in 1897 of Indiana limestone and marble trim on the first two stories. It is a wonderful example of eclectic Italian Renaissance style architecture consisting of large brick arches, a decorative cornice, and an arcade of Roman-arched windows on the fifth floor. The building was created by noted Rochester architect J. Foster Warner. Hiram W. Sibley, the builder, was a realtor, banker and philanthropist. He was the son of Hiram Sibley, the builder of the Western Union Telegraph Company.
In 1985, the building was place on the National Register of Historic Places.
