This is a wonderful reproduction of the masterpiece by Frederick, Lord Leighton which he completed in about 1895. It depicts a Vestal Virgin of Rome invoking the ancient gods for the protection of the city. In the religion of the ancient Romans, the prosperity and divine protection of the city was secured by the eternal vigilance of the Vestal Virgins over the sacred Eternal Flame of the City which they tended.
