Description
Per the National Park Service website, [Devils Tower is] "...an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills." This site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest traditional crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to explore and define our place in the natural and cultural world.Devils Tower did not visibly protrude out of the landscape until the overlying sedimentary rocks eroded away. As the elements wore down the softer sandstones and shales, the more resistant igneous rock making up the tower survived the erosional forces. As a result, the gray columns of Devils Tower began to appear as an isolated mass above the landscape. As rain and snow continue to erode the sedimentary rocks surrounding the Tower's base, more of Devils Tower will be exposed.

So the reason it's flat across the top is it used to be level with the ground around it?!? Wow! (I actually had to read that in several of your photo descriptions to really have it sink in.) L/F

Great pic John. This is one of those strange places in the US that I really want to visit at some time. How close canyou get to it?....
John M Bailey replied:
Thanks Sean. You can easily get to the base. There is a well maintained path that goes all the way around it. Skilled climbers can ascend up the sides as far as they are able, though you may need a permit to do that.

John you our excellent 'Devils Tower' photo reminds me of the movie 'Encounter of the Third Kind'. :-)
John M Bailey replied:
I'm reminded of that too. In fact, the campground right outside the park plays the movie every evening. :)
