Just before we arrive at Fjadrargljufur Canyon it started snowing….and snowing….and snowing! While Fjadrargljufur Canyon is about 100 m deep and about 2 km long, we couldn’t see much in the white out! Still, since seeing snow was a welcome relief from the rain, I didn’t mind! Fjadrargljufur Canyon was created by a progressive erosion that took millions of years, from waters from the glaciers. Gljúfur means canyon in Iceland and Fjaðrá is the name of the river that runs through it.
UPDATE: March 2019: After our visit in February 2019, my ears perked up when I heard a story on the radio about this canyon being now closed to tourists. Here is part of an article in Travel and Leisure: "Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber has influence. And sometimes that influence can have unintentionally negative results. In late 2015, he shot his “I’ll Show You” music video in a little-known canyon in southeast Iceland. Four years later, the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon closed all public paths to the area after it became clear that the increased foot traffic was destroying its fragile vegetation, according to Lonely Planet. According to The Telegraph, the number of visitors to the canyon increased from 150,000 to 282,000 between 2017 and 2018 and Daníel Freyr Jónsson from the Environment Agency of Iceland told RUV that he believes it’s directly related to Bieber’s music video, which to date has received 440 million views on YouTube. The agency initially planned to close the gorge for two weeks to allow for recovery, but extended the closure to June 1 after seeing the extent of the damage." Recent articles and videos from the 'Reykjavik Grapevine' say Justin Bieber is not to blame! It is just the increased number of visitors to Iceland in general that has caused the damage. In any event, the canyon is closed to visitors until June 2019.
2020: Fjadrargljufur Canyon is open at the moment, but it does not mean it cannot change when travelers start to behave disrespectfully, so always check the current conditions before your visit.
