Hydrangea Or Butterflies, You Decide 3d
Painting - Watercolor On Rice Paper
Watercolor on rice paper, 3D butterflies and blossoms collage, by Conni Schaftenaar.
Beautiful blue butterflies morph out of and dance around a blue hydrangea blossom!
This is one of my two submissions to the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts 2019. It was juried in and was on display at the Fed Gallery in Grand Rapids from late May to late June 2019. It now hangs in the home of an artist friend, who loves it, and for whom I made extra butterflies to fly up the wall above it - such fun!
It is based on a previous painting I had done on rice paper of butterflies morphing up out of a blue hydrangea blossom, with the question asked for the viewer to decide whether the "flower" was really a hydrangea or maybe a cluster of those blue butterflies. I wanted to try and execute it with 3D elements, and this is the result.
I painted the hydrangea and background leaves and loose colors on ginwashi rice paper, pulled the edges to make them fuzzy and somewhat uneven and mounted it on a board. I then glued that board to a black canvas and then applied 3D butterflies and hydrangea blossoms and leaves all over. The 3D butterflies and blossoms are painted on rice paper and formed into 3-dimensional pieces by cutting them out and painting them with Mod Podge, then using egg cartons to shape them appropriately while drying. The 3D leaves are also painted on the rice paper and stiffened with Mod Podge and glued down.
