Humpback whales live 80 to 90 years. They are in all the world’s major oceans, travelling great distances during seasonal migrations. They are generally seen close to the shore, dramatically jumping out of the water or slapping the surface with their fins & tails. Humpback Whale populations were greatly reduced, some by more than 95%, before a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1985. Although the endangered whales have increased in numbers, they still face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, boat/ship strikes and man-made underwater noise.
