Description
"House of the Seasons, Jefferson, Texas" by Catherine Sherman.
The House of the Seasons was built in 1872 during the boom times of Jefferson when it was the largest inland port in Texas. Colonel Benjamin H. Epperson, who built the house, was a prominent lawyer, political leader, entrepreneur, and confidante of Sam Houston. The house is also known as the Epperson-McNutt House.
The house is a beautiful example of the transition period between the Greek Revival and Victorian styles of architecture. according to the house's website, the unique features of the house are the cupola and the murals. In the cupola, under the picture, each wall contains a different colored stained glass that creates the illusion of the seasons of the year.
The House of the Seasons is now a bed and breakfast inn and also offers tours.
Known as the Epperson-McNutt House in its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, the house was placed on the NRHP in 1969 as part of the Jefferson Historic District. The house is also a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
