“Hopi Cactus Rose”

Original photography of a cactus flower as viewed from Georgia O’Keefe’s compound and museum in Abiquiu, New Mexico -- then turned to contemporary paintography art via the thread of interest that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way. Here the appreciation of O’Keeffe and her work in the southwest USA also pays respect to cultural elements-- to First Nations, Hopi and to the great Zuni stories.

Symbolism: The Hopi Cactus Rose is symbolic of Warmth, Protection and Endurance references solidarity with Earth and Mother Nature to include a visual story of the fraught process of selection toward these positive factors we --each of us--face every day. The juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning different perspectives. Each of the images in this series bases its tale on the concept of change with compassion.

Method: In terms of artistic influences, you may recognize a bit of Post-Painterly Abstraction, to Abstract Expressionist, even to Fauvism – ( this combination Lyrical Abstraction)-- I create from what is around me often translating a photo into mixed media format, reaching out for the story or metaphor with digital manipulation to create the narrative as texture, patterns, repetition, and even collage appear...
